about

Take Me Down was another song Phillip Roebuck and I wrote together in collaboration. We wrote it in late May, and we recorded it at MOXE in July. It wasn’t even supposed to be on the record, as when I sent the tracklist to Jordan it hadn’t even been written. In the June between, my grandfather passed away. I was lucky enough to be able to be with him as he died, and my family and I spent the night with him, singing tunes of his childhood and holding him. When I was asked to sing, the only song I could find in myself was this one. It was a salve for me through the act of losing him, and when Phil and I got down to Nashville, we played it for the sake of playing it. In doing so, it became clear to me that this was the song that needed to end this record. As much as “Sweet Pea” is a record about blooming into the “spring” of one’s life, it is also an album which aims to honor every aspect of that season; not just uplifting the rebirth, but also holding the sacred nature of the decay from which it is born. We recorded it on one of our last days in Nashville — just me and Phil in the tracking room, playing and singing in the late hours of the night. It is without a doubt one of my favorite moments on this record.

lyrics

They are going to take me down
They are going to take me down
All my debts have been paid
Now my head can lay down to rest
In the cold ground
They are going to take me away
They are going to take me away
All my songs have been sung
All my doing's been done
No time to run, and no time to stay
They are going to take me to you
They are going to take me to you
There are things I will miss
But your sweet kiss will keep me going when the day is through
They are going to take me down
They are going to take me down
All my debts have been paid
Now my head can lay down to rest
In the cold ground
All my debts have been paid
Now my head can lay down to rest
In the cold ground
