Whenever I think of “Sweet Pea”, I am reminded of the nervous delight I had when I wrote it. I was seventeen, and it was my first “naughty” song. Over time, it’s become an anthem of pleasure and desire, but I’ll never forget that it stemmed from a very closeted and recovering child performer trying to grow into their incoming adult identity. I wrote this song on a whim with my longtime collaborator, Phillip Roebuck, at the Lake Lucille Chekhov Project, an artistic commune we are both members of and where we met when I was ten years old. He cooked up the delicious guitar riff, and as I began to freestyle over it, I looked across the room and found a coffee mug with the words “SWEET PEA” written across it, and it was as if the song spilled out of me. “Sweet Pea” was my childhood nickname, and is the birth flower of the month I was born in. Knowing this song is based in imagery of rebirth through pleasure while holding on to the thought that my roots don’t have to contradict that incoming sensual agency, but could even support its blooming, is why I knew this song needed to start the record. From the beginning of recording with Jordan Brooke Hamlin down in Nashville at MOXE studios, I knew that this was also the title of the record; I am my mother’s Sweet Pea, and a part of me always will be.
