Lovely Day came from the first score I ever wrote for “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov. I wrote it for a younger female character named Anya. In the play, she was mired in her own grief and familial dysfunction, but I could sense and had faith as a reader that she would go on to lead a full and happy life (which in the end may have just been my own deep-seated hopes for myself). This is strangely the happiest song of the record, and over time has come to represent what an absolute gift grief can be, and what an immense honor it is to be able to love and miss those we’ve lost.
