Changeling came out through reading and being deeply inspired by Akwaeke Emezi’s novel “Freshwater” and “Three Sisters” by Anton Chekhov. Both had characters within them that were navigating sensations of moving through the world in bodies which did not feel like their own; a skin which contained multiple selves, and not all of those selves benevolent to the flesh they had to live in. As someone who has moved through dysphoria their whole life without words for it until recently, and has at many junctures felt as if my body and self are worlds apart from each other, these stories planted a seed that eventually became Changeling. Every time I sing this song, I feel such joy in the rage and grief I am able to hold in every guitar lick and vocal growl, and each time I hear what Jordan, myself and the band were able to capture on the record, I feel the ritual this song has turned into for myself, and hopefully it can hold that same space for anyone who needs it.
lyrics
Sometimes I feel like a changeling
There's a spirit in my skin
That comes from the insides of another
That I've never lived in, never lived in
My tongue is dipped in shadow
Wherever I spit darkness comes
I am the opposite of a maker
I am, I am the undone
But sometimes I feel like my mother
Or the mother who came before
Sobs are racking my spine that aren't mine
That aren't yours
OoOoOoOo
I despise crying or sweating
It feels too much like blood
I am crawling down a ladder
I don't recall crawling to the top of
But I used to know a few things
How to do things, how to cry
But now my mind mixes up living and dying
Living and dying, living and
I am bleeding out a family
Who only knows how to lie down
When I see with disgust that our pulses match up
I am met with the shrieking sound of
OoOoOoOo
One foot in one foot out
Skin to skin climbing down
We're still in hear me out
One foot in one foot
We will work until this body drops
'til the soul inside shuts up
We have come here to take care
of what we need to take care of
And you, you, you, you are human, you are sleeping, you are blood
We are the air inside your marrow
Shouting to wake up wake up wake up wake up wake up
